Board Chair Update 11-09-2022

Dear Federation Members and Supporters,

I hope you are well.

Today, marks the 77th anniversary of the Moo Duk Kwan® and would like to share some developments since our last update.

2023 National Festival and Championships

July 20-22, 2023

Embassy Suites Loveland Hotel, Spa and Conference Center
4705 Clydesdale Parkway
Loveland, CO 80538

We considered many options and ultimately the board voted for this venue.  The board would like to thank Nina Sloan KSN from Region 8 for volunteering her time, spearheading the initial search, and working closely with our federation leadership.  She is a local studio owner in Region 8 at Rocky Mountain Martial Arts – Front Range.

Let us congratulate our Region 8 for hosting the 2023 National Festival and Championships.  Additional details will be provided as soon as they become available.

Regional Tournaments and Competitions

One of the topics brought to the attention of the board by Jared Rosenthal SBN from Region 10 was the importance of each region planning opportunities for competitions. Regional tournaments provide our members opportunities to compete locally and regionally.  The more experience gained at these events lead nicely to attend national events.  Without local and regional competitions, members may be reluctant to compete nationally.  He encouraged everyone to help organize and support more regional competitions going forward.

World Moo Duk Kwan Heritage Program (Heritage Program)

On July 21, 2022 at the board meeting Kwan Jang Nim spoke about the Heritage Program and shared his vision.  About 5 years ago, Kwan Jang Nim contemplated the future of the Moo Duk Kwan and initiated the framework for the Heritage Program.  The Heritage Program is not a separate organization but provides a marketing arm for the US Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan Federation.

Two major questions arose after the establishment of the Heritage Program and Kwan Jang Nim spoke to those points below:

  • “Who owns the program?” – “We own the program. The membership of the US Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan Federation owns the program.  That is the big picture.”
  • “Who benefits from the program?” – “Every national federation members/nations benefit from the program. The ultimate goal is for prospects to find our culture, value it and join the Moo Duk Kwan.  That is the ultimate goal.”

In conclusion “For our family, we are the same Moo Duk Kwan brothers and sisters who work together under the roof the US federation in the USA.  It is our program.”

2022 US Ko Dan Ja Shim Sa in Tulsa, OK

The US Ko Dan Ja Shim Sa and Moment with the Masters kicked off on Friday, November 4, 2022.  Thirty candidates and close to seventy visitors and officials attended this event in Tulsa, OK.  Everyone enjoyed the technical training conducted by the TAC Officials and Kwan Jang Nim.  More importantly, the human relations experienced by all is an integral part of our membership and personal development.  There is no substitute for attending events in-person and sharing your passion for martial arts with one another.

Thank you.

Yours in Moo Duk Kwan,

John Kim
Chairman of the Board
